The James Hutton Institute is a world-renowned independent research organisation conducting fundamental and applied science relevant to land, crops, and natural resources. The work undertaken by the James Hutton Group is right at the top of the global agenda tackling the impact of climate change and threats to food and water security.

The Cell and Molecular Sciences Department based in Dundee has a thriving research environment with over 100 plant scientists with research specialisms covering cell and molecular biology, plant genetics, genomics, pathology, physiology, and biochemistry.

Within CMS, the Soft Fruit and Perennial Crops Group (SFPC) is at the forefront of research on a range of soft fruit crops, the outputs from which feed directly into breeding programmes managed by James Hutton Limited and as applications/approaches to cultivation onto grower farms. The research within SFPC aims to maintain and enhance fruit quality and sustainability of production. We aim to combine a mechanistic understanding of how environmental factors influence fruit quality and productivity with a genetic and genomic approach to identify the underpinning heritable factors that will allow sustainable cultivation towards net zero.

We are looking to appoint a highly motivated researcher ready to develop a leadership role on a tenure track position. We particularly invite applicants with a background in genetics, QTL analysis or genomics, or other associated skills, to work in a team of researchers and breeders with skills and knowledge in fruit physiology and biochemistry, production systems, IPM, field phenology and phenotyping and other approaches with a focus on sustainable soft fruit crop improvement. The appointee will additionally benefit from a wider links across the department with access to equipment skills and knowledge for cell biology, genomics and metabolomics.  Furthermore, the appointee will have access to a fully automated, controlled environment, high-throughput phenotyping platform equipped with multiple optical sensors following the opening of the Advanced Plant Growth Centre scheduled for winter 2023.

We have strong strategic links with several universities where our PhD students are registered.
